Frequently Asked Questions

How is conception date estimated?

If you know your LMP and have regular ~28-day cycles, conception is estimated as LMP + ~14 days (around ovulation). Working backward from a known due date: conception ≈ due date − 266 days. Ultrasound-derived dates are more accurate for irregular cycles.

How accurate is the conception date?

Even with a precisely known LMP, ovulation timing varies; the estimate is typically within ±3–5 days. Sperm can survive 5 days, so the actual fertilizing intercourse may have occurred days before conception. This is an estimate, not a medical diagnosis - confirm dates, fertility, and any concerns with your obstetrician or midwife.

Why does my doctor count from LMP, not conception?

The LMP is reliably reported by patients, while conception date usually is not. All standard pregnancy milestones (e.g., "12 weeks pregnant") use the LMP-based gestational age, even though fetal development began ~2 weeks later.

Can conception happen outside the fertile window?

It is unlikely but not impossible - ovulation can shift by several days, and sperm survive up to 5 days. This is why no fertility-awareness or rhythm method is 100% reliable for contraception.
