Sound Level (Decibel) Calculator

Interpret decibel levels, hearing damage risk, and how much sound reduction is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a decibel?

A logarithmic unit of sound intensity. Each +10 dB is a 10× increase in intensity but only sounds about twice as loud. 0 dB is the quietest audible sound.

When does sound damage hearing?

Prolonged exposure above 85 dB causes hearing loss. NIOSH halves safe exposure for every +3 dB: 8 hours at 85 dB, 4 hours at 88, 2 at 91, etc.

How loud are common sounds?

Whisper 30 dB, conversation 60 dB, traffic 80 dB, lawnmower 95 dB, rock concert 110 dB, jet engine 140 dB. Pain threshold is around 120-130 dB.

What does NRR mean on hearing protection?

Noise Reduction Rating in dB. Real-world reduction is typically NRR/2 due to imperfect fit. Combine plugs and muffs for high-noise environments.
