What is the difference between net force and applied force?
Applied force is a single push or pull you exert on an object. Net force is the vector sum of every force acting on it - your applied force plus friction, drag, gravity, and the normal force. Only the net force produces acceleration (F_net = m·a). If you push a box with 30 N but friction resists with 10 N, the applied force is 30 N while the net force is just 20 N.
Why is force measured in newtons (N)?
The newton is the SI unit of force, defined so that 1 N = 1 kg·m/s². That comes straight from F = m·a: one newton is the force that accelerates a 1 kg mass at 1 m/s². Because it is built from kilograms, meters, and seconds, using mass in kg and acceleration in m/s² gives force directly in newtons with no conversion.
