Frequently Asked Questions
What is vertical exaggeration?
The ratio of horizontal to vertical scale in a topographic cross-section. A VE of 10× makes elevation look 10 times taller than reality.
How do I read scale ratios?
A 1:50,000 scale means 1 unit on the map = 50,000 of the same units on the ground. Use the denominator (50,000) in the formula.
Is high VE ever bad?
Yes - it visually distorts slopes. A gentle real slope can look like a cliff at 20× VE.
