Frequently Asked Questions
Is wind chill the actual temperature?
No. Wind chill is how cold the air feels on exposed skin because moving air strips away heat faster. The real air temperature is unchanged.
When does wind chill apply?
The official US/Canadian formula applies only when air temperature is at or below 50°F (10°C) and wind speed is above 3 mph. Below that, wind effects are negligible.
Can wind chill freeze water in pipes faster?
No. Inanimate objects can't cool below the actual air temperature. Wind chill only affects living tissue (and the rate at which warm objects cool toward air temperature).
What wind chill causes frostbite?
At wind chill of −18°F (−28°C), exposed skin can frostbite in about 30 minutes. At −60°F (−51°C), it takes only 5 minutes. Cover all skin in extreme cold.
