Frequently Asked Questions
How is drain field area calculated?
Required sq ft = (people × gal/person/day) ÷ application rate (gpd/sq ft). A 4-person household at 75 gpd × 4 = 300 gpd, on soil with 0.6 gpd/sq ft loading rate, needs 300 ÷ 0.6 = 500 sq ft of trench bottom.
How does perc rate translate to loading rate?
Perc rate (min/in) sets soil loading: 1–5 min/in → 1.2 gpd/sq ft (gravel/sand), 30 min/in → 0.6, 60 min/in → 0.4, > 120 min/in → unsuitable. Slower percolation needs larger fields.
What daily flow should I use per bedroom?
Most codes assume 150 gpd per bedroom (2 people × 75 gpd). A 3-bedroom home is sized at 450 gpd regardless of current occupancy, so resale is protected.
Why add a reserve area?
Most jurisdictions require a 100% reserve (an unbuilt second field of equal size) so a failed primary can be replaced without re-permitting. Keep that area free of trees, driveways, and structures.
