Frequently Asked Questions
What is total external static pressure (TESP)?
TESP = sum of pressure drops across filter + coil + supply duct + return duct + grilles/registers, in inches of water column. Manufacturer-rated TESP is typically 0.5 in w.c. for residential PSC blowers, 0.8 in w.c. for ECM.
What are typical drops by component?
High-MERV filter: 0.15–0.30 in. Wet evaporator coil: 0.20–0.30 in. Supply duct: 0.10–0.20 in. Return: 0.10 in. Registers/grilles: 0.03–0.05 in each. Add a 0.10 in safety margin.
How do I measure it on a running system?
Drill ¼ in test ports before the air handler return and after the supply plenum (downstream of coil); measure with a manometer. TESP = supply reading − return reading (absolute values added).
What happens if TESP exceeds the rating?
Airflow collapses - a 1,200 CFM blower at 0.5 in rated may deliver only 800 CFM at 0.9 in. Coils freeze, capacity drops, and ECM motors run hotter and shorten life.
