How This Calculator Works

Aviation emissions scale with distance flown. The estimate is: Distance × 0.09 kg CO₂ per passenger-kilometer (a representative economy-class figure) × a cabin-class multiplier (premium seats occupy more aircraft floor and weight per head) × a radiative-forcing uplift of ~1.9. The uplift accounts for non-CO₂ high-altitude effects - contrails, nitrogen oxides, water vapor - that roughly double aviation's real climate impact versus the raw fuel-burn CO₂ alone. Class factors used: economy 1, premium economy 1.6, business 3, first 4. A round trip doubles the distance.

Worked Example

A 5,500 km flight (about London ↔ New York) in economy, round trip, one passenger: distance is 5,500 × 2 = 11,000 km. Emissions = 11,000 × 0.09 × 1 × 1.9 ≈ 1,881 kg, or roughly 1.9 tonnes CO₂e. At a $15/tonne offset price that is about $28 to neutralize. Fly the same route in business class (factor 3) and the figure triples to ~5.6 tonnes - more than a third of the ~2.3 tonne annual per-person footprint widely cited as climate-compatible. For scale: a 1,000 km economy round trip is ~0.34 t; a 16,000 km ultra-long-haul economy round trip is ~5.5 t; the same long-haul in first class (factor 4) approaches 22 t for one passenger - a year's worth of a typical European's entire carbon budget in a single round trip.

Travelers use this to budget voluntary carbon offsets, compare a non-stop versus a one-stop itinerary (each extra take-off and the detour add fuel burn, so two short hops usually beat one only on very thin routes), or weigh flying against rail for trips under ~700 km where high-speed rail emits a fraction as much. Companies use per-trip estimates to populate Scope 3 business-travel inventories, justify a remote-meeting policy, set an internal carbon price, or cap an employee's annual flight allowance. ESG and sustainability teams aggregate these to report against science-based targets. For an individual, choosing economy over business on a single long-haul trip, or replacing one annual long-haul with a regional trip, is among the largest discretionary emissions cuts available - larger than a year of diet or recycling changes combined.

Common Mistakes

Ignoring the radiative-forcing uplift. Fuel-burn CO₂ alone understates aviation's climate impact by roughly half.

Using straight-line map distance. Actual routes, holding, and detours add 5–10%; great-circle distance is a floor.

Splitting a round trip in half. Enter one-way distance and select round trip - the tool doubles it.

Treating all offsets as equal. Offset quality and permanence vary enormously; price is not the only factor.

Real emissions depend on aircraft type and age (a modern A350 burns far less per seat than an older 747), seat load factor (a half-empty plane doubles per-passenger emissions), belly cargo carried, actual routing and altitude, headwinds, and taxi/holding time. The science of non-CO₂ effects (contrails, NOx, contrail cirrus) is still genuinely uncertain - credible uplift multipliers range from ~1.7 to over 3, so the result could reasonably be 30% lower or higher. It does not model airport ground operations, the embodied carbon of building and scrapping the aircraft, or the climate quality and permanence of any given offset project. Treat the output as an order-of-magnitude figure for comparing choices, not a certified inventory for compliance reporting.
