Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find the cash value of an award to compare?
Search for the same flight or hotel stay as a paid booking on the airline or hotel's direct site (not an OTA). Use the cash price without taxes and fees for an apples-to-apples comparison, since award bookings still include taxes. Enter that price in the optional cash price field to see your CPP.
Why do hotel points have lower CPP than airline miles?
Hotels inflate award pricing in high-demand periods and at popular properties. A hotel room that costs $500 cash often requires 50,000 points at 1 cent each - no better than a statement credit. Airlines have a wider range of redemption values; premium cabin international awards can hit 5 to 10 cents per mile. The exception is World of Hyatt, whose award pricing tends to stay favorable relative to cash rates.
Should I transfer points to an airline or book through the card portal?
Card portals (Chase Travel, Amex Travel) typically offer 1.0 to 1.5 cents per point. Partner airline transfers can yield 1.5 to 4+ cents per point on business and first class international awards. Unless the portal offers a specific flight you cannot book as a partner award, transferring to an airline partner usually provides higher value - but transfers are often one-way and irreversible, so confirm the award is available before transferring.
Do points expire?
Policies vary by program. Most airline miles and hotel points expire after 12 to 36 months of account inactivity, not from the date earned. A single points-earning activity (credit card purchase, hotel stay, flight) resets the clock. Some premium credit cards waive expiration entirely for points earned through the card. Check your program's terms to understand your specific expiration rules.
