Frequently Asked Questions
How much does temperature change tire pressure?
About 1 psi for every 10°F change - pressure drops in the cold and rises in heat. The calculator uses the ideal gas law on absolute temperature for accuracy and also shows this rule of thumb.
Should I set pressure to the door sticker or the tire?
Use the vehicle door-jamb placard value (the tire sidewall is a maximum, not a recommendation). Set it "cold" - before driving - since driving heats tires and raises pressure several psi.
Why does my TPMS light come on in fall?
The first cold snap can drop pressure below the ~25% low threshold overnight. Top up to the placard value at the colder temperature and the warning clears.
Does altitude matter too?
Slightly - atmospheric pressure falls with elevation, nudging gauge pressure up a bit. Temperature is the far larger day-to-day effect, which is why this tool focuses on it.
