How This Calculator Works

This calculator is for informational and educational purposes only and is not official handicap certification - for an official index use your golf association's system. A golf Handicap Index measures a player's demonstrated scoring ability so golfers of different skill can compete fairly, whether in a weekend match, a club championship flight, or a friendly with strokes given. Under the World Handicap System it is derived from score differentials, which normalize each round for course difficulty using the course rating and slope so that a 90 shot on a brutal course is recognized as a better performance than a 90 on an easy one. The index is the average of a defined number of your best recent differentials - typically the lowest 8 of your last 20 - so it deliberately reflects your potential rather than your average performance; the system assumes you will play to roughly your demonstrated ceiling on a good day, which is why most rounds score a little above your handicap. This tool reproduces that calculation from the scores, rating, and slope you enter, then converts the result to the figure you would actually use on a given course.

Formula / Method

For each round, the score differential = (adjusted gross score − course rating) × 113 ÷ slope rating, where 113 is the slope of a course of standard difficulty. Take your most recent 20 rounds (fewer if you have fewer), sort the differentials low to high, and average the lowest N according to the WHS table (1 differential for 3–5 rounds, scaling up to 8 for 20 rounds). The result is truncated to one decimal place to give the Handicap Index. Slope is normally between 55 and 155; a higher slope means a harder course for the bogey golfer.

Worked Example

Suppose a course rating of 71.5 and slope 125, and a round of 88. Differential = (88 − 71.5) × 113 ÷ 125 = 16.5 × 113 ÷ 125 = 1864.5 ÷ 125 ≈ 14.9. Do this for each of the last 20 scores, sort them, and average the lowest 8. If those eight average 14.2, the Handicap Index truncates to 14.2. On a course with slope 130 this player's Course Handicap would be roughly 14.2 × 130 ÷ 113 ≈ 16 strokes, the figure actually used during play.

Common Mistakes

Averaging all differentials instead of only the best N - the index uses your lower scores.

Rounding the index instead of truncating; WHS drops the extra digits, it does not round up.

Confusing Handicap Index (portable) with Course Handicap (course−specific strokes).

Using slope as if it were course rating; rating sets the baseline, slope scales relative difficulty.

Entering raw scores without applying net double bogey / maximum hole adjustments where required.
