Bowling Handicap Calculator

Calculate your bowling handicap and handicap series from average, basis, and percentage

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a bowling handicap calculated?

Handicap = round((basis score − your average) × handicap percentage). With a 220 basis, 90% factor and a 150 average: (220 − 150) × 0.90 = 63 pins per game.

What is the "basis" and "percentage"?

The basis is a target score set by the league (often 200–220). The percentage (commonly 80–100%) controls how fully the gap to that basis is offset, equalizing competition between bowlers.

How is a handicap series figured?

Multiply the per-game handicap by the number of games. A 63-pin handicap over a 3-game series adds 189 pins to the scratch total for the handicap series score.

What if my average is above the basis?

If your average meets or exceeds the basis, the handicap is typically 0 (it is not negative) - strong bowlers get no bonus pins, while lower-average bowlers receive more.
