How are calories from alcohol estimated?

Alcohol kcal ≈ fluid ounces × ABV% × 1.6, since pure ethanol provides about 7 kcal/g. A 12 oz beer at 5% ABV contributes roughly 12 × 5 × 1.6 ÷ 100 ≈ 96 kcal from alcohol alone.

Where does the 1.6 factor come from?

Ethanol is ~7 kcal/g at a density of 0.789 g/ml, and 1 oz = 29.57 ml, so 1 oz of pure alcohol ≈ 163 kcal; scaling by ABV fraction yields about oz × ABV% × 1.6. It captures alcohol calories before any sugar.

How do carbs add to the total?

Add carbohydrate calories at 4 kcal/g: a beer with 13 g carbs adds about 52 kcal on top of its alcohol calories. Sweet cocktails and dessert wines can be carb-dominant.

Why are spirits lower-calorie than they seem?

A 1.5 oz shot of 40% spirit is about 1.5 × 40 × 1.6 ÷ 100 ≈ 96 kcal with near-zero carbs; mixers usually add the rest. This is informational, not dietary advice - please drink in moderation.
