Framing Calculator

Calculate stud count, plate lengths, and header board for wall framing from wall length, stud spacing, and opening count.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many studs do I need for a 20-foot wall at 16 OC?

Base studs: ceil(20 / (16/12)) + 1 = 15 + 1 = 16. Add corner and opening extras on top.

How much lumber for top and bottom plates?

Three runs of single plate equal 3 x wall length in linear feet. Two top plates plus one bottom plate is the standard (3 x length ft).

How many extra studs per door opening?

Each door adds 3 studs: two jack studs supporting the header and one cripple stud above the header.

What is the difference between 16 OC and 24 OC framing?

16 OC is the standard and works with all standard drywall and sheathing. 24 OC saves lumber and reduces thermal bridging but is typically used with 2x6 studs and heavier sheathing.
