Mortar Calculator

Calculate cubic feet of mortar and bags of mortar mix needed for any number of bricks or concrete blocks, plus the sand quantity required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pre-mixed bags vs site-mixed?

Pre-mixed mortar bags include cement, lime, and graded sand in correct proportions - just add water. Site-mixing is cheaper at scale (10+ yards) but requires separate cement, lime, sand purchases and quality control. Most residential projects use pre-mixed.

How long does mortar last after mixing?

Use within 2-3 hours of mixing. After 2 hours, cement begins setting and workability declines. Discard mortar that has started to harden - re-tempering with water weakens the bond.

Does color additive change quantity?

Color additives (mortar pigments) replace 1-2 percent of cement by weight. They do not significantly affect mortar volume. Mix color samples in advance - mortar dries 30-50 percent lighter than when wet.
