Frequently Asked Questions
How many courses and blocks does my wall need?
Courses are the number of rows: divide the wall height in inches by the block face height and round up. Blocks per course divide the wall length in inches by the block face length and round up. Multiply the two for the wall total, then add a cap course and a waste allowance.
Should I bury the bottom course, and how does that change the count?
Yes. A common rule of thumb is to bury about one course, roughly 10 percent of the finished wall height, below grade so the base resists sliding and frost heave. Add that buried height to the exposed height you enter here so the calculator counts the extra hidden course.
Do I need cap blocks?
Caps give the wall a finished top edge and are usually bonded on with masonry adhesive. They are optional for a rough utility wall but standard for anything visible. Turn the cap course off if your block system does not use a separate cap.
How much waste should I add?
For a straight wall, 5 percent covers breakage and a few cuts. Add 10 percent or more for curves, corners, columns, or a stepped base, where you cut more blocks to fit.
Does this calculator design the wall?
No. It only counts blocks for buying. Walls taller than about 4 ft, or any wall with a slope, driveway, or other surcharge above it, usually need an engineered design, drainage, geogrid reinforcement, and a permit. Check local code and a professional.
