Frequently Asked Questions
How do I measure baseboard for a room?
Add up the length of every wall to get the perimeter, then subtract the width of each doorway or cased opening that has no trim. This calculator does that from the room length and width plus your doorway count.
How much waste should I add?
A 10% allowance is a good default. It covers miter cuts at corners, scarf joints on long runs, and the occasional bad cut. Add more for rooms with many corners or if you are new to trim work.
Should I subtract door openings?
Yes, subtract any opening that will not receive baseboard, such as a doorway or a cased opening to another room. This calculator deducts the doorway width you enter for each doorway.
What board length should I buy?
Longer boards mean fewer seams on long walls, but they are harder to handle and transport. Pick 8, 12, or 16 ft based on your wall lengths and what your supplier stocks, then let the calculator count the boards.
Does this work for crown molding or chair rail too?
Yes for the linear footage. Crown, chair rail, and other trim all follow the room perimeter, so the linear feet estimate applies. Just skip the door deduction for crown molding, since it runs unbroken above the openings.
