Road Base Calculator

Calculate tons of road base (crusher run, dense-graded aggregate) needed for a driveway or road from dimensions and compaction factor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is dense-graded aggregate?

A blend of crushed stone with continuous gradation from fine particles to coarse, designed to pack tightly with minimal voids when compacted. Standard for road and driveway bases because of high stability and low settling. AASHTO M147 specifies the gradation.

Compaction factor for sand?

Lower than aggregate - typically 1.10-1.15 for clean sand. Sand particles are rounded and slip into voids more easily than angular crushed stone, so less compaction is needed. Wet sand compacts further than dry.

How thick should road base be?

Residential driveway: 4-6 inches finished. Local road: 8-10 inches. Truck route: 12-18 inches. Place over geotextile fabric on weak soils. Always over a compacted sub-grade - never directly on soft topsoil or wet clay.
