Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate wall square footage for painting?
Gross area = 2 x (length + width) x height. Subtract 20 sq ft per door and 15 sq ft per window to get net paintable area.
How many gallons of paint for a 12x14 room with 8 ft ceilings?
Net wall area with 1 door and 2 windows: 2x(12+14)x8 = 416 sq ft, minus 20+30 = 366 sq ft. At 350 sq ft/gal: about 1 gallon per coat, just over 2 gallons for 2 coats - round up to 3 one-gallon cans (or a 2-gallon plus a quart).
What sq ft is a standard door for paint calculation?
Standard interior door (32x80 in) = 17.8 sq ft. Most painters use 20 sq ft to include the frame and trim area.
Does the wall area include the ceiling?
No. This calculator gives wall area separately from ceiling area. Walls are the vertical surfaces; the ceiling is the horizontal surface overhead.
How many square feet of wall does a gallon of paint cover?
One gallon of interior latex paint covers 350-400 sq ft per coat on smooth, primed surfaces. On bare drywall or textured surfaces plan for 300-350 sq ft per coat. New drywall absorbs the first coat heavily - always plan for 2 coats plus a primer coat on new work.
Do I paint the ceiling the same color as the walls?
That is a design choice, but the ceiling area is always calculated separately from the wall area since it typically uses a flat sheen rather than eggshell or satin. This calculator gives both areas.
What is the standard wall height for residential construction?
8 feet is the standard for newer homes. Older homes sometimes have 7-ft walls. Luxury homes may have 9-ft or 10-ft ceilings. Measure your actual ceiling height rather than assuming.
How do I handle a room with a sloped ceiling?
For a room with one sloped wall (cathedral or vaulted ceiling) use the average wall height: (tallest height + shortest height) / 2. For complex shapes break the room into rectangular sections.
