How This Calculator Works

Gross wall area is the total perimeter times wall height: 2 x (length + width) x height. Net area subtracts the area of all doors and windows. Ceiling and floor areas are simply length times width.

Formula: gross = 2 x (L + W) x H. Net = gross - (doors x door_size) - (windows x window_size). Ceiling = Floor = L x W.

Standard Door and Window Sizes

Default values in this calculator use common residential dimensions:

Interior door: 32 in x 80 in = approximately 18 sq ft. The default 20 sq ft accounts for the full door rough opening including trim.

Standard window: 36 in x 48 in = 12 sq ft. The default 15 sq ft accounts for a typical window with trim surround.

Adjust these defaults if your doors and windows differ significantly from standard sizes.

For paint estimation purposes, many painters simply deduct 20 sq ft per door and 15 sq ft per window as a rule of thumb.

Do I paint the ceiling the same color as the walls?

That is a design choice, but the ceiling area is always calculated separately from the wall area since it typically uses a flat sheen rather than eggshell or satin. This calculator gives both areas.

What is the standard wall height for residential construction?

8 feet is the standard for newer homes. Older homes sometimes have 7-ft walls. Luxury homes may have 9-ft or 10-ft ceilings. Measure your actual ceiling height rather than assuming.

How do I handle a room with a sloped ceiling?

For a room with one sloped wall (cathedral or vaulted ceiling) use the average wall height: (tallest height + shortest height) / 2. For complex shapes break the room into rectangular sections.
