Calorie Density Calculator

Calculate calories per 100g and see how energy-dense a food is on a Very Low to Very High scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as low calorie density?

Under 1.5 kcal/g (most vegetables, broth-based soups, fruit). Medium is 1.5-4 kcal/g (lean meat, starchy foods). Over 4 kcal/g is high (nuts, cheese, oil at 9 kcal/g).

Why does calorie density matter for weight loss?

People tend to eat a similar weight of food per day. Lowering the calorie density of meals (more vegetables, lean protein) lets you feel full on fewer calories.

Is "low density" the same as "healthy"?

Not necessarily. Diet soda has near-zero density but no nutrients. Olive oil has very high density but is part of a healthy diet in moderation. Density is one factor among many.

How is calorie density calculated?

Calories per 100 g of edible food. A food label's "per serving" calories divided by serving weight in grams, times 100, gives the density.
