How long will a climb take from my power and weight?
Climb time depends on the power needed to lift total mass up the grade plus rolling and air resistance. As a rough rule, climbing speed (m/s) ≈ power ÷ (total mass × g × grade), so a 75 kg rider+bike at 250 W on an 8% grade climbs at about 250 ÷ (75 × 9.81 × 0.08) ≈ 4.2 m/s.
What is VAM?
VAM (velocità ascensionale media) is vertical meters climbed per hour. It equals elevation gained ÷ time × 3,600, and elite climbers exceed 1,600 m/h on steep grades.
How is VAM related to power-to-weight?
On steep climbs VAM ≈ W/kg × ~250–300 (the constant drops as grade lessens because more power fights air resistance). A rider at 4 W/kg on a steep climb reaches roughly 4 × 280 ≈ 1,120 m/h VAM.
Why does climbing reward low weight so much?
On a climb most power goes into lifting mass against gravity (m × g × height), so power-to-weight ratio dominates. Shedding bike or body weight raises VAM directly, while aerodynamics matters far less than on the flats.
