Frequently Asked Questions
How is NP calculated?
1) 30-second rolling average of power. 2) Raise each value to the 4th power. 3) Take the mean. 4) Take the 4th root. The 4th-power weighting reflects how metabolic cost climbs faster than linear with intensity.
Why 30 seconds and the 4th power?
Andy Coggan derived both empirically: 30-second smoothing matches physiological lag in lactate/oxygen response, and the 4th power best fit the relationship between intermittent power and steady-state equivalents in lab studies.
When does NP equal average power?
On perfectly steady efforts (smooth indoor trainer, long climb with no surges) NP and AP differ by <2%. The more variable the ride, the bigger the gap - group rides and crits often show NP 15–25% above AP.
Are short-interval workouts well-represented by NP?
Less so. NP under-weights very short, very high spikes (<30 s) and can read low for sprint or neuromuscular sessions. For those, use peak power durations and total kJ rather than NP.
