How This Calculator Works

The SAT (400–1600) and ACT (1–36) measure overlapping skills on different scales, so colleges use an official concordance table jointly published by the College Board and ACT to treat the two as comparable. Concordance is banded: a range of SAT totals maps to a single ACT composite (and vice-versa) because the tests are not perfectly equivalent point-for-point. This tool looks up your score in those bands - e.g. an SAT 1260–1290 concords to an ACT 27 - and reports the equivalent plus an approximate national percentile context.

Worked Example

You scored SAT 1280. That falls in the 1260–1290 band, which concords to ACT 27. Going the other way, an ACT 30 sits in the 1360–1380 SAT band, so it's reported as roughly SAT ~1370. Note the asymmetry: converting SAT→ACT yields one number, but ACT→SAT yields a range because each ACT point spans 20–40 SAT points. Always present both your real score and its concordant equivalent - never inflate a converted score. Reference anchors worth knowing: SAT 1600 = ACT 36; SAT ~1520 ≈ ACT 34; SAT ~1400 ≈ ACT 32; SAT ~1200 ≈ ACT 25; SAT ~1060 ≈ ACT 21 (close to the national mean); SAT ~900 ≈ ACT 16. A 40-point SAT bump near the top of the scale can be worth two ACT points, while the same 40 points near the middle moves the ACT composite by only one - the bands are not evenly spaced.

Percentile notes are approximate and shift slightly each year as the national cohort changes; a 1200 was a higher percentile a decade ago than today. The table here concords composite/total scores only - section-level concordance (e.g. SAT Math to ACT Math) uses a different official table and is not modeled. Older (pre-2016 redesign) SAT scores require a separate two-step concordance and should never be compared directly. Treat the output as a planning comparison, not a reportable score.
