How This Calculator Works

Phantom load (also called standby, vampire, or leaking power) is the electricity a device draws while switched off or idle but still plugged in. Each device's waste is its standby wattage × the hours per day it sits idle. We total daily watt-hours across devices, then scale to a year: Annual kWh = (Σ watts × idle hours/day × 365) ÷ 1,000. Multiplying by your electricity rate gives the dollar cost, and by a grid emissions factor (kg CO&sub2; per kWh) gives the carbon cost. The payback line compares the annual saving to the cost of a smart power strip that cuts the load.

Worked Example

A game console drawing 12 W idle for 22 hours/day = 264 Wh/day. Over a year: 264 × 365 ÷ 1,000 ≈ 96.4 kWh. At $0.16/kWh that is about $15.40 a year from one device - and a typical home runs 20–40 such devices. A whole-home phantom total of 80–120 W is common, costing $110–$170/year. A $25 smart strip that eliminates a $30/year cluster pays for itself in roughly 10 months, then saves money every year after.

Real-World Use

Standby power is estimated at 5–10% of residential electricity use in the US. The worst offenders are devices with clocks, remotes, instant-on features, or external power bricks: cable/satellite boxes, game consoles in instant-on mode, older TVs, audio receivers, and always-on chargers. A clamp meter or plug-in energy monitor (Kill A Watt style) gives exact figures; the defaults here reflect typical measured values.

Common Mistakes

Counting active hours as idle. Only the hours a device is off-but-plugged-in count toward phantom load; running power is a separate calculation.

Unplugging things that should stay on. Routers, DVRs mid-recording, and refrigerators are not phantom loads - killing them breaks function.

Assuming "off" means zero. Many modern devices draw 0.5–3 W in true standby; soft-off can be higher.

Ignoring the power brick. A warm-to-the-touch adapter with nothing attached is still drawing power.

Limitations

Standby wattage varies widely by make, model, and firmware; defaults are typical estimates, not your specific devices - measure for accuracy. The CO&sub2; figure depends entirely on your local grid mix (near zero for hydro/nuclear regions, higher for coal-heavy grids); adjust the emissions factor accordingly. Smart-strip payback assumes the strip actually eliminates the modeled load, which it does only for switchable devices, not always-on equipment on its "always hot" outlets.
