Calculate rounds, total matches, and byes for a single or double elimination bracket

Frequently Asked Questions

How many matches are in a single-elimination bracket?

Exactly N − 1 matches for N players, because every match eliminates one player and all but the champion must be eliminated. A 16-player bracket has 15 matches.

How many matches in double elimination?

About 2N − 2 matches (sometimes 2N − 1 with a bracket reset in the grand final), since each player must lose twice to be out. A 16-player double-elimination event runs roughly 30–31 matches.

What are byes and when are they needed?

When the player count is not a power of two, byes advance top seeds in round one so the field shrinks to the next power of two. For 12 players the next power of two is 16, so 16 − 12 = 4 byes are given.

How many rounds will the bracket have?

Single elimination has ceil(log₂(N)) rounds - 4 rounds for 16 players, 5 for 32. Double elimination adds losers-bracket rounds plus the grand final.
