Why do almonds need so many more hives per acre than other crops?
Almond trees are largely self-incompatible, meaning they need pollen from a different variety to set nuts, and the entire regional bloom happens in a compressed roughly three-week window each February. What if my farm already has wild bees, bumblebees, or other native pollinators?
The hives-per-acre figures in this calculator assume honeybees are doing most of the pollination work, which is the standard planning assumption for commercial-scale, bloom-synchronized crops like almonds. If your site has strong existing native pollinator populations (bumblebees, mason bees, and others), you may be able to stock somewhat below the calculated figure, especially for crops like apples or blueberries where wild bees are often effective co-pollinators. Almonds and other crops with a very short, intense bloom window are the least forgiving of under-stocking, since there's little time for a season-long build-up of wild pollinator activity to compensate.
Why does the hive count round up instead of to the nearest whole number?
This is a "how many do I need" sizing calculation, not an average. If the math says you need 7.5 hives, rounding to the nearest whole (8, using standard rounding) happens to work here, but a requirement of 7.1 hives rounding to the nearest whole would give you 7 - one hive short of what the crop needs. Since under-pollinating directly costs yield and fruit quality while one extra hive is a modest added cost, the calculator always rounds up to the next whole hive for any fractional requirement, no matter how small the fraction.
How much honey should I actually expect to harvest?
A healthy hive in a good forage region typically yields roughly 30-60 lb of surplus honey per year - honey beyond what the colony needs to overwinter, which is what a beekeeper can actually harvest. This calculator defaults to 40 lb/hive/year as a reasonable mid-range estimate, but you can adjust the expected-yield-per-hive input up or down to match your region's typical nectar flow, since actual yield varies with weather, forage availability, and colony management.
Do I need to own the hives myself, or can I rent them for pollination?
Both are common. Many growers, especially of almonds and other bloom-synchronized crops, contract with commercial beekeepers who truck hives in for the bloom window and remove them afterward - a pollination-rental arrangement rather than year-round hive ownership. Growers of crops with a longer season or diversified operation sometimes keep their own hives instead, capturing both the pollination service and the honey harvest.
