Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good feed conversion ratio?
Lower FCR is better because it means less feed per unit of weight gain. Broiler chickens achieve 1.6-2.0, pigs 2.5-3.5, and beef cattle 5.0-8.0. Salmon and trout are the most efficient at 1.0-1.3 because fish are cold-blooded and do not burn energy for thermoregulation.
How can I improve my FCR?
Feed quality, feed freshness, animal health, stocking density, and water access all affect FCR. Reducing feed waste through proper feeder design, maintaining optimal temperature for the species, and minimizing stress also improve conversion efficiency.
Is FCR the same as feed efficiency?
FCR and feed efficiency are reciprocals. FCR = feed consumed / weight gained (lower is better). Feed efficiency = weight gained / feed consumed (higher is better). Most livestock producers use FCR because the numbers are more intuitive for benchmarking.
