Frequently Asked Questions
How much grass seed do I need per 1000 sq ft?
It depends on species. Kentucky bluegrass new seeding is ~2–3 lbs/1000 sq ft, tall fescue ~6–8 lbs, perennial ryegrass ~6–9 lbs. Overseeding an existing lawn uses roughly half the new-seeding rate.
What's the difference between seeding and overseeding rates?
New (bare-soil) seeding needs the full rate for complete coverage. Overseeding into thin existing turf uses about 50% of the new rate because established grass already holds ground and competes with seedlings.
Why do seeding rates vary so much by species?
Rates track seed size: fine fescues and bluegrass have ~1–2 million seeds per pound and spread, so less weight is needed, while large-seeded tall fescue (~225,000 seeds/lb) is a bunch-type grass needing more pounds for density.
Will doubling the seed give me a thicker lawn?
No. Over-seeding causes seedlings to compete for water, light and nutrients, producing weak, thin, disease-prone grass. Stick to the labeled rate and rely on proper watering and time for thick turf.
