How This Calculator Works

Buying seed by the acre sounds simple until germination enters the picture. A drill or planter is calibrated to drop a target weight of pure live seed per acre, but the bag in your hand is rarely 100% viable - the tag lists a germination percentage, and any seed that will not sprout is dead weight you paid for but cannot count toward your stand. This calculator multiplies your field area by the agronomic seeding rate to find the base requirement, then divides by the germination fraction to inflate the order so that the living seed actually hits the target rate. Finally it converts that adjusted weight into whole bags rounded up, because seed is sold by the bag and you would rather have a little extra than come up short halfway across the field. The result is a buy quantity that lands a full, even stand instead of a thin, patchy one.

Formula / Method

Base seed (lb) = area (acres) × seeding rate (lb/acre). Germination-adjusted seed = base seed ÷ (germination % ÷ 100), which raises the order so the viable fraction meets the target. Bags = ceiling(adjusted seed ÷ bag size in lb), always rounded up. If you leave germination blank the tool assumes 100% (no adjustment); leaving bag size blank simply skips the bag count. Zero or negative area or rate, and germination outside 1–100%, are rejected with a friendly message so the math never returns a nonsense value.

Worked Example

You are drilling 40 acres of wheat at 90 lb per acre with seed tagged at 90% germination, sold in 50 lb bags. Base seed = 40 × 90 = 3,600 lb. Adjusted for germination = 3,600 ÷ 0.90 = 4,000 lb - the extra 400 lb replaces the 10% that will never sprout. Bags = ceiling(4,000 ÷ 50) = 80 bags. Skip the germination adjustment and you would short the field by roughly eight bags, leaving thin spots that invite weeds.
