Estimate animal units a pasture supports from forage, utilization, and intake

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an animal unit?

An animal unit is a 1,000-lb cow with calf eating about 26 lb of dry matter per day. A 1,400-lb cow is roughly 1.4 animal units.

Why is utilization only 50%?

Plants need residual leaf area to recover. Harvesting more than about half the forage under continuous grazing weakens roots and thins the stand over time.

What is an AUM?

An animal-unit-month is the forage one animal unit eats in a month, about 26 lb per day times 30 days. It is a common way to express grazing capacity.

How do I estimate forage production?

Clip and weigh sample cages, or use NRCS ecological-site or soil-survey forage estimates for your region as a starting point, then refine with field data.
