Frequently Asked Questions
How are grazing days calculated?
Divide available forage (acres times dry-matter yield times utilization) by the herd daily intake (head times weight times intake percentage).
What intake percentage should I use?
About 2.6% of body weight in dry matter per day for a grazing animal. Growing, lactating, or larger animals eat more, so adjust upward.
Why limit days per paddock?
Short grazes followed by long rests let plants rebuild root reserves and leaf area, the engine of a productive rotation. Long stays overgraze the plants.
Do I enter annual or current forage?
Enter the dry matter actually standing in the paddock now, not the annual total. Using annual production wildly overstates the grazing days available.
