Frequently Asked Questions
How is mowing time estimated?
Time = area ÷ (effective mowing rate). Effective rate = deck width × speed × efficiency. For a 21 in (1.75 ft) deck at 3 mph (~264 ft/min) and 80% efficiency, you cover roughly 0.85 acres per hour.
Why apply an efficiency or overlap factor?
Real mowing loses time to overlap between passes, turns, trimming and obstacles. A 10–20% overlap and turn allowance (efficiency ~0.80–0.90) makes the estimate realistic rather than the theoretical best case.
Does a wider deck always save time?
Generally yes - coverage rate scales with deck width - but very wide decks scalp uneven ground and are slower to maneuver around obstacles, so the practical gain is smaller on small, complex lawns.
How does mowing speed affect cut quality?
Faster ground speed reduces time but can leave uneven cuts, clumping and missed grass, especially in tall or wet turf. Most riding mowers cut best at 3–5 mph; slow down for dense growth.
