Understanding Emitter Types

Not all drip emitters are the same. The GPH printed on the package is the rated output at the manufacturer's test pressure, typically 15–25 PSI. Real-world flow varies with system pressure, so measure or pressure-test your system if precision matters.

Choosing the Right Target Depth

The depth in this calculator is the depth of water applied per watering event, not the depth of the wetted soil profile. Soil type determines how far that applied water travels downward.

Sandy soil: Water moves straight down quickly and spreads little horizontally. Apply 0.25–0.5 inch per session more frequently (every 1–2 days in summer) to keep the root zone moist without wasting water below it.
Loam (ideal garden soil): Water moves downward at a moderate pace and spreads laterally. Apply 0.5–1 inch every 2–3 days; most vegetable gardens do well on this schedule.

How do I know how many emitters to use?

A basic rule: space emitters so their coverage circles overlap. For loam soil and standard 1 GPH emitters, one emitter per square foot is roughly right for densely planted beds. For individual plants (tomatoes, peppers), one or two emitters placed 4–6 inches from the stem is sufficient. The number of emitters is not a design output of this calculator - enter however many you have and it tells you how long to run them.

Why does my system run much longer than the calculator says?

The most common causes are lower actual emitter flow than rated (check pressure and inspect for clogs), fewer operating emitters than entered (some may be blocked or missing), or a target depth that actually requires more water in your specific soil. Measure actual flow with a bucket and stopwatch: hold a bucket under one emitter for a minute and multiply by 60 to get true GPH.

Can I run drip and sprinklers on the same zone?

No - drip zones and sprinkler zones must be on separate valves because they operate at different pressures and require very different run times. Mixing them on one zone will over-water the drip area and under-water the sprinkler area simultaneously.

How often should I run the system?
