Longevity Score Calculator

Assess longevity risk using the sitting-rising test, grip strength, and balance time linked to long-term mortality research

Frequently Asked Questions

What tests does this calculator use to assess longevity?

This calculator incorporates the sitting-rising test (SRT), grip strength, and single-leg balance time, which are among the fitness markers most strongly linked to long-term mortality in peer-reviewed research. A 2012 study in the European Journal of Cardiovascular Prevention found that people scoring below 8 out of 10 on the SRT had a 5-fold higher mortality risk over a 12-year follow-up. These are functional fitness markers, not medical diagnostics.

How is the sitting-rising test performed?

Start standing, then lower yourself to a seated cross-legged position on the floor without using your hands, knees, or arms for support, then rise back to standing the same way. Each use of a hand, knee, or forearm for support deducts points, as does loss of balance. The full score is 10 (5 for sitting, 5 for rising). Practice on a padded surface. This test should not be attempted by individuals with joint pain, balance disorders, or recent injuries without physician clearance.

Why is grip strength a longevity marker?

Grip strength is a reliable proxy for overall muscle mass and musculoskeletal health. A 2015 Lancet study of 140,000 adults found that grip strength was a stronger predictor of cardiovascular mortality than systolic blood pressure. Declining grip strength is also associated with increased risk of cognitive decline, mobility disability, and hospitalization in older adults. Resistance training, particularly for the upper body, helps maintain grip strength as you age.

Can I use this score to compare myself to others?

The score gives you a relative sense of functional fitness compared to age-based norms from published research. It is an educational tool, not a medical assessment. Individual health outcomes depend on genetics, medical history, sleep, stress, nutrition, and many other factors beyond what this calculator measures. Use the score to identify areas for targeted improvement and discuss results with your physician or a certified fitness professional.
