How This Calculator Works

Volume measures the three-dimensional space a solid occupies, expressed in cubic units. Each shape has a closed-form formula derived from integrating cross-sectional area along an axis. Prisms and cylinders are base area × height because every cross-section is identical. Pyramids and cones are exactly one-third of the prism or cylinder that bounds them - a result Archimedes proved and calculus confirms via ∫A(x) dx. The sphere's (4÷3)πr³ comes from rotating a semicircle and integrating shells. This tool selects the right formula for the chosen shape, validates that every dimension is positive, and reports the volume alongside the exact formula so you can see the substitution. Mixed units are never auto-converted - if you enter centimetres the answer is in cubic centimetres; keep all inputs in the same unit.

Worked Example: Cylinder r = 5, h = 8

A cylinder of radius 5 and height 8 uses V = πr²h. The base is a circle of area π × 5² = 25π ≈ 78.54 square units. Multiply by the height 8: V = 25π × 8 = 200π ≈ 628.3185 cubic units. Contrast a cone with the same radius and height: V = (1÷3)πr²h = (1÷3) × 200π ≈ 209.44 - exactly one third, because the cone tapers linearly to a point. A sphere of radius 5 would be (4÷3)π × 125 ≈ 523.6, larger than the cone but smaller than the cylinder that encloses it (the famous 2:3 sphere-to-cylinder ratio Archimedes carved on his tomb).

Common Mistakes & Edge Cases

Mixing units - entering radius in cm and height in m gives a meaningless number. Convert first.

Confusing radius with diameter; the formulas here expect radius. Halve the diameter before entering.

Forgetting the 1÷3 factor for cones and pyramids - a very common error that triples the answer.

Using slant height instead of perpendicular (vertical) height for cones and pyramids; volume always uses the perpendicular height.

Negative or zero dimensions are rejected - a solid needs strictly positive extent.
