Frequently Asked Questions
What is surface area to volume ratio?
SA/V measures how much surface area an object has per unit of volume. Smaller objects and irregular shapes have higher ratios.
Why does it matter for cells?
Cell membranes must move nutrients in and waste out fast enough. As cells grow, V scales with r³ while SA scales with r², so SA/V drops and exchange becomes harder.
Which shape has the smallest SA/V?
A sphere. For any given volume, a sphere has less surface area than any other shape.
