How This Calculator Works

HDP-T (Tempo) was reauthorized to compensate members for sustained operational tempo (typically 220+ days deployed in 365), paid at roughly $495/month. Formula / Method

HDP_total = HDP_monthly × months_on_status. HDP-L tiers correspond to the level of austerity in the location: Tier 1 ($50) for mild hardship, Tier 2 ($100) for moderate, Tier 3 ($150) for severe locations (remote Pacific atolls, certain African and Central Asian posts, etc.). The DoD maintains a designated location list updated semi-annually based on Department of State Post Hardship Differential surveys. HDP-M pays at the $150 flat rate but only for the days the member actually performs the qualifying mission - prorated daily if the assignment is shorter than a month. HDP-T accrues retroactively once the 220-day deployed threshold is reached and continues to be paid for each subsequent month deployed. HDP-L, HDP-M, and HDP-T may be paid concurrently (they are not mutually exclusive), though the practical cap is rare to exceed.

While there, the corporal participates in a 90-day mortuary affairs mission qualifying for HDP-M, adding 3 × $150 = $450 for those months. Combined HDP earnings for the year: about $1,650 - modest compared with combat-zone CZTE benefits, but stackable with FSA, Imminent Danger Pay, and the Combat Zone Tax Exclusion. A senior NCO who reaches the 220-day HDP-T trigger during a yearlong deployment can earn an additional ~$495/month for the remaining ~150 days, adding roughly $2,400 in HDP-T alone.

Common Mistakes

Confusing HDP with Imminent Danger Pay (IDP) - HDP is for hardship/austerity, IDP ($225/month) is for hostile-fire risk; the two are separate and can be paid concurrently.

Assuming every overseas duty location pays HDP-L - the designated-area list is narrow and many OCONUS posts (Germany, UK, Japan main islands) do not qualify.
