Formula / Method

HDIP-P = monthly_rate × months_on_status, where monthly_rate is $150 (standard) or $225 (HALO). Eligibility requires that the member be assigned to a jump-coded position by paragraph and line number on the unit's MTOE/TDA, be designated on monthly jump-pay orders, and have completed five jumps within the preceding twelve consecutive months. A jumpmaster or member assigned to a jump-required billet who fails the "five in twelve" rule loses jump pay until they regain currency - back-pay is not authorized for the gap months. Members holding both parachute and other HDIPs (e.g. demolition, flight) may stack up to two HDIPs at the lower of the two rates each.

Annual = $225 × 12 = $2,700. Over a 36-month tour the member earns $8,100 in jump pay alone - taxable, but not subject to retirement deductions and excluded from base pay for promotion math. A static-line jumper at the standard $150/month rate would earn $1,800/year, or $5,400 over the same 36-month tour.

Common Mistakes

Confusing "jump pay" with combat-zone tax exclusion - HDIP-P remains taxable income unless earned in a designated combat zone.

Forgetting the "five jumps in twelve months" currency rule - a single missed quarter can end the streak and stop the pay.

Assuming HALO orders automatically pay the higher rate - the orders must specifically authorize military free-fall duty, not merely list a HALO qualification.
