What is MyCAA?

My Career Advancement Account is a DoD scholarship for spouses of active-duty service members in pay grades E-1 to E-5, W-1 to W-2, and O-1 to O-2 (plus eligible Guard/Reserve activations). It funds licensing, certification, and associate-degree programs.

How much can MyCAA pay?

Up to $4,000 lifetime, with a $2,000 annual fiscal-year cap. Programs costing more than $2,000 in one course require a waiver. Funds go directly to approved schools after a course is requested and approved.

What programs are eligible?

Portable career fields: licensure (cosmetology, real estate, nursing), certifications (PMP, AWS, CompTIA, medical billing), and associate degrees. Bachelor's and master's degrees are not covered; check the MyCAA portal for current approved schools.

How This Calculator Works

My Career Advancement Account (MyCAA) is a U.S. Department of Defense scholarship program that pays up to $4,000 lifetime (capped at $2,000 per fiscal year) for portable career training for eligible military spouses. Eligible spouses are those married to active-duty service members in pay grades E-1 through E-6, W-1 through W-2, and O-1 through O-3 (including activated Guard and Reserve in those grades). Funded training must lead to a license, certification, or associate degree in a portable career field - programs like cosmetology licensing, medical billing certificates, paralegal credentials, dental assistant programs, and so on. This calculator tracks what MyCAA will cover for a specific course given how much of the lifetime and fiscal-year caps the spouse has already used. Estimates only; verify eligibility and apply through the MyCAA portal at mycaa.militaryonesource.mil.

Formula / Method

Coverage_for_request = min(course_cost, min(lifetime_cap − lifetime_used, fiscal_year_cap − year_used)). Out-of-pocket = course_cost − coverage. The fiscal year for DoD purposes runs October 1 – September 30; the $2,000 yearly cap resets on October 1 each year regardless of when training started. A spouse who paces training across two fiscal years can therefore draw the full $4,000 lifetime cap by enrolling in one $2,000 program before October and another after. MyCAA pays the school directly under an approved Financial Assistance (FA) document - spouses cannot front the money and seek reimbursement.

Worked Example

A spouse has already used $500 of MyCAA lifetime and $0 this fiscal year, and now wants to enroll in a $1,200 medical-billing certificate. Lifetime remaining: $4,000 − $500 = $3,500. Fiscal-year remaining: $2,000 − $0 = $2,000. Allowed this request: min($1,200, min($3,500, $2,000)) = $1,200. Covered fully; out-of-pocket $0. After this course the spouse has $2,300 lifetime remaining and $800 fiscal-year remaining. A subsequent $1,500 course in the same fiscal year would exceed the $800 remaining and be capped: MyCAA pays $800, spouse pays $700, and must wait until October 1 to draw against next fiscal year's $2,000.

Common Mistakes

Assuming all spouses qualify - spouses of E-7+, W-3+, and O-4+ service members are NOT eligible for MyCAA, regardless of household financial need.

Trying to use MyCAA for bachelor's degree coursework, exam-only fees, or general-studies courses - MyCAA covers only career certification, licensing, or associate degree programs in approved fields.

Forgetting that MyCAA pays the school directly and CANNOT reimburse a spouse who paid out of pocket.

Letting the fiscal year roll over while sitting on unused fiscal-year cap - unused amounts do NOT carry forward, though lifetime cap is preserved.

Letting an Education and Training Plan (ETP) expire - an approved ETP is required before any FA document can be issued.
