Cat Food Portion Calculator

Convert your cat's daily calorie target into wet and dry food portions per meal by reading the kcal per serving from the label

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a cat's food portion determined?

RER = 70 × (kg)^0.75, then a factor (neutered adult ≈ 1.2, intact ≈ 1.4, kitten 2–2.5, weight loss ≈ 0.8) gives daily calories. Dividing by the food's kcal density yields cans of wet or cups of dry per day, split by meals. This is general guidance, not veterinary advice - consult your veterinarian for personalized recommendations for your pet.

Wet vs dry - does the math change?

Only the caloric density does. Canned food is mostly water (~70–90 kcal per 3 oz) while dry is energy-dense (~300–500 kcal/cup), so enter the figure for the food you actually feed, or split it for mixed feeding.

Why are indoor cats prone to overfeeding?

Indoor, neutered cats burn less, so free-feeding dry food easily exceeds needs. Measured portions based on RER and a 1.0–1.2 factor help prevent the very common feline obesity. This is general guidance, not veterinary advice - consult your veterinarian for personalized recommendations for your pet.

Is this the same as a cat calorie calculator?

No - it turns the calorie target into measured cans/cups per meal from your product's label, rather than just reporting a calorie number.
