How This Calculator Works

One-way ANOVA tests whether three or more group means are equal by partitioning total variability into two pieces. The between-groups sum of squares SS_B = Σ n_i(x̄_i − x̄_grand)² captures how far group means spread from the overall mean; the within-groups sum SS_W = ΣΣ(x − x̄_i)² captures noise inside groups. Dividing each by its degrees of freedom (df_B = k − 1, df_W = N − k) yields mean squares, and their ratio F = MS_B ÷ MS_W follows an F distribution under H₀. The upper-tail p-value uses the F CDF, evaluated via the regularized incomplete beta function with a continued fraction - a numerical approximation good to about four decimals.

Worked Example: Three Groups

Groups A = {23,25,21,24,26}, B = {30,28,31,29,27}, C = {22,20,24,23,21} have means 23.8, 29.0, 22.0 and a grand mean of 24.93. SS_B = 5(23.8−24.93)² + 5(29.0−24.93)² + 5(22.0−24.93)² ≈ 132.1 with df_B = 2, SS_W = 14.8 + 10.0 + 10.0 = 34.8 with df_W = 12, giving MS_B ≈ 66.07 and MS_W ≈ 2.90. Then F ≈ 22.8 with a p-value far below 0.001. We reject H₀: group B is clearly elevated. A post-hoc test (Tukey HSD) would confirm which pairs differ.

When to Use It

Comparing the means of 3+ independent groups - e.g. three teaching methods, four fertilizer types, five store layouts.

As an omnibus screen before targeted pairwise comparisons, controlling the family-wise error rate.

For exactly two groups, ANOVA reduces algebraically to the pooled two-sample t-test (F = t²).

Common Mistakes & Assumptions

ANOVA assumes independent observations, approximately normal residuals, and roughly equal group variances (homogeneity). Running many t-tests instead of one ANOVA inflates the false-positive rate - that is the entire reason ANOVA exists. A significant F tells you some means differ but not which; never stop at the F-test. Unequal variances combined with unequal group sizes can badly distort the result; use Welch's ANOVA in that case.

Interpretation & Limitations

A significant omnibus F is an invitation to a post-hoc procedure (Tukey, Bonferroni, Games-Howell), not a conclusion by itself. Report an effect size such as η² = SS_B ÷ SS_T to convey practical magnitude. With very large samples a tiny mean spread becomes significant; with small unbalanced groups real differences are missed. This implementation uses the classical fixed-effects model and the standard F approximation, so far-tail p-values should be read as order-of-magnitude beyond about 10⁻⁶.
