Frequently Asked Questions
What is one-way ANOVA?
A test of whether three or more group means differ, comparing variance between groups to variance within groups via the F statistic.
Why not run many t-tests instead?
Multiple pairwise t-tests inflate the false-positive rate. ANOVA tests all groups at once at the chosen α.
What does a significant F tell me?
That at least one group mean differs - not which. Follow up with post-hoc tests (Tukey HSD) to locate the differences.
What are ANOVA's assumptions?
Independent observations, roughly normal residuals, and similar group variances (homogeneity). Welch's ANOVA relaxes the equal-variance assumption.
