How This Calculator Works

A countersink is a conical recess cut into wood so a flat-head screw sits flush with or slightly below the surface. The head of the screw is a truncated cone, and the countersink bit cuts a matching cone. The depth of the recess determines whether the head sits proud, flush, or below the surface.

The geometry is straightforward trigonometry. The half-angle of the cone is (head_angle / 2). The countersink depth needed to accommodate the head is:

depth = (head_diameter / 2) / tan(head_angle / 2)

This gives the depth from the wood surface to the point of the cone. In practice, set your bit to this depth and the screw head will be exactly flush.

Screw Head Angles

Flat-head (countersunk) screws come in three standard head angles:

82 degrees: The American National Standard (ANSI) angle for wood screws, machine screws, and most deck screws sold in the US. The most common angle in North American woodworking.

90 degrees: Common for metric DIN-standard screws and many European fasteners. Interchangeable with 82-degree countersinks only in softwoods where the wood compresses slightly; for hardwoods and metals, match the angle precisely.

100 degrees: Used for drywall screws and some sheet-metal screws. The wider angle allows the screw to bury into drywall paper without tearing it. Not a standard angle for wood joinery.

Mismatching angle means either a gap at the edge (head angle smaller than bit angle) or the head riding high (head angle larger than bit angle). Always match them.

Pilot Hole and Material Tips

A countersink recess alone is not enough for clean fastening. Use these guidelines:

Hardwoods (oak, maple, hickory): Drill a shank clearance hole (same diameter as the screw shank) plus a pilot hole (70-80% of root diameter) and countersink. Without a pilot hole, hardwood splits or the screw breaks.

Softwoods (pine, fir, cedar): Pilot hole can be smaller (50-65% of root diameter). The wood compresses slightly to seal around the threads.

Plywood and MDF: Countersink as usual, but do not overtighten - the surface layer crushes and the head pulls through. Use a larger-head screw or a washer for thin sheet goods.

Plug cutters: For furniture, cut a grain-matched wood plug and glue it over the recessed head to hide the fastener entirely. The countersink depth should equal the plug length plus the head height.
