Frequently Asked Questions
What countersink angle for a standard US wood screw?
82 degrees is the ANSI standard for wood screws and most deck screws in the US. Use 90 degrees for metric DIN screws.
Why is my screw head sitting above the surface?
The countersink is either too shallow or the bit angle does not match the screw angle. Deepen the recess or switch to a sharp matching-angle bit.
What is the difference between a countersink and a counterbore?
A countersink makes a tapered cone recess for a flat-head screw. A counterbore makes a flat-bottomed cylindrical hole for a cap screw or wood plug.
Should I countersink before or after drilling the pilot hole?
Either order works. Many woodworkers countersink first and use the center point as a guide for the pilot hole. Combination tapered bits do both in one pass.
