Finish Coverage Calculator

Calculate quarts or gallons of stain, oil, or poly needed from surface area, coats, and product spread rate

Frequently Asked Questions

How much finish do I need for a project?

Finish needed = area × coats ÷ spread rate × waste factor. For 120 sq ft, 3 coats, a spread rate of 400 sq ft/gal and 15% waste, that's 120 × 3 ÷ 400 × 1.15 ≈ 1.04 gallons.

What are typical spread rates?

Oil-based polyurethane and varnish cover about 400–500 sq ft/gal per coat, water-based poly 500–600 sq ft/gal, wiping oil ~250–350 sq ft/gal, paint primers ~250–400 sq ft/gal. Porous woods and first coats absorb more.

How many coats should I plan for?

Most film finishes need 3 coats on flat surfaces and 4 on tabletops or floors that see heavy wear. Penetrating oils typically need 2–3 wet-on-wet applications until the wood stops absorbing.

How do I convert gallons into smaller cans?

1 US gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 128 fl oz. Buy the next size up that matches your need - finish stored after opening only lasts months, so big cans for small jobs are usually wasted.
