How much does density altitude add to takeoff distance?
Roughly 10% more distance per 1,000 ft of density altitude for a normally-aspirated piston aircraft. At 5,000 ft density altitude, expect about 50% more ground roll than the sea-level, standard-day POH figure.
How much does a headwind shorten the takeoff or landing roll?
About 10% shorter per 9 kt of steady headwind component, capped near a 70% reduction. A tailwind is far worse - about 10% longer per 2 kt of tailwind component, which is why even a small tailwind component matters.
Why does the calculator recommend a runway longer than the adjusted distance?
It divides the adjusted distance by 0.80, following the common personal-minimums rule of never planning to use more than 80% of the available runway - this builds in margin for gusts, technique variance, and an off-nominal day.
Does grass or wet grass really add that much distance?
Yes - rule-of-thumb factors are about +15% for dry grass and +25% for wet grass versus a paved, hard surface, due to rolling resistance. Soft or muddy turf can add even more; always inspect an unfamiliar strip before using it.
