How This Calculator Works

Thinset consumption depends on tile size because larger tiles require more back-buttering and use larger trowel notches to ensure full coverage. The calculator multiplies tile area by the coverage rate for your tile size category, then adds a waste factor for waste, mix adjustment, and coverage imperfections.

Formula: thinset_lbs = area x coverage_rate x (1 + waste/100). Standard bag size is 50 lbs. Coverage rates are manufacturer averages for standard-notch trowels and smooth backs.

Trowel Notch Size by Tile

Using the correct trowel notch size is critical for full coverage:

Mosaic and small tiles (under 4 in): 3/16 in V-notch or 1/4 in x 3/16 in U-notch

Floor tiles 4-8 in: 3/8 in x 3/8 in square notch

Standard floor tiles 8-15 in: 1/2 in x 1/2 in square notch

Large format tiles over 15 in: 1/2 in x 3/4 in deep notch + back-butter the tile

ANSI A108.02 requires at least 80% mortar coverage for dry areas and 95% for wet areas and floors. Always check coverage by periodically lifting a tile during installation.
