How This Calculator Works

The net price is what a family actually pays, not the published sticker. Sticker = Tuition + Fees + Room & Board + Books. Net Price = Sticker − gift aid (grants + scholarships you never repay). Work-study and loans are shown separately because they are self-help, not aid - loans must be repaid with interest and work-study is earned wages, so subtracting them from sticker would understate the true cost of attendance. The four-year projection compounds both sticker price and gift aid at your chosen tuition-inflation rate so the later, pricier years are not missed.

Worked Example

A college lists $38,000 tuition, $2,000 fees, $12,000 room & board, $1,200 books → sticker $53,200. A package offers $18,000 in need-based grants and a $5,000 merit scholarship = $23,000 gift aid. Net price = $53,200 − $23,000 = $30,200 - about 57% of sticker. A $5,500 federal loan and $2,500 work-study don't lower net price but reduce the immediate out-of-pocket to ~$22,200, with the $5,500 becoming debt that accrues interest. At 4% annual tuition inflation the four-year total net price is roughly $128,000 - not 4 × $30,200 = $120,800, because year four costs noticeably more than year one. Contrast two offers: School A, $60,000 sticker, $40,000 grant → net $20,000; School B, $40,000 sticker, $8,000 grant → net $32,000. The "expensive" school is $12,000/yr cheaper - the exact inversion sticker shock hides.
