Stair Climbing Calorie Calculator

Estimate calories burned climbing stairs by flights or time, including a descending-stairs adjustment

Frequently Asked Questions

How many calories does climbing stairs burn?

Stair climbing is intense - MET ≈ 8.0 ascending. A 70 kg person burns ~9.3 kcal/min climbing, so 10 minutes ≈ 95 kcal. Descending is much lighter (MET ≈ 3.5).

How many calories per flight of stairs?

Roughly 0.1–0.15 kcal per kg per flight (~1 flight ≈ 10 steps). For a 70 kg person that is ~8–11 kcal per flight climbed, before counting the easier descent.

Why separate ascending and descending?

Going up is concentric, high-MET work; going down is eccentric and far less metabolically costly (though harder on the knees). Lumping them together overestimates burn, so the tool can adjust for the descent.

Is stair climbing good exercise?

Yes - it builds leg strength and cardiovascular fitness with a high calorie rate in little time, and it is accessible. Progress gradually if you have knee issues or are deconditioned.
