Fetal growth rate and maturation timing differ genetically between cattle types. Bos indicus (Zebu/Brahman) genetics in particular carry consistently longer average gestation than Bos taurus dairy and most Continental or British beef breeds, a difference that shows up across many published breed averages, not just anecdotally.

Transrectal ultrasound can detect pregnancy as early as day 26-28 in cattle, though many practitioners prefer day 30 or later for a more reliable read. This calculator's early-check milestone at day 30 reflects that common practical window rather than the absolute earliest possible detection.

Missing it does not harm the cow - it simply means her next calving will land more than 365 days after this one, which stretches out her calving interval and, over a herd, gradually pushes calving season later each year. Many well-managed herds run intervals of 370-380 days rather than a perfect 365, so missing the target by a few days is a common, correctable outcome rather than an emergency.

Some beef operations do shorten the VWP to 45-50 days specifically to compress a spread-out calving season into a tighter window over a few years, since cows that fall behind the target rebreed date get progressively later each cycle. The tradeoff is less uterine recovery time, which can lower first-service conception rates in cows in thinner body condition - body condition score at calving matters more than the exact VWP number for whether a shorter waiting period pays off.
