Poultry Incubation Calculator

Calculate the expected hatch date and key incubation milestones - candling, lockdown, and hatch - from the egg-set date, for chicken, duck, turkey, quail, or Muscovy duck eggs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my hatch rate low even though I followed the temperature and humidity targets?

Hatch rate is sensitive to more than the incubator's set point - egg age and storage before setting (fertility drops after about 7-10 days of storage), turning consistency, incubator calibration drift (a thermometer/hygrometer that reads a few degrees or percentage points off the true value inside the incubator), and breeder-flock fertility all affect outcomes independently of a correctly dialed-in incubator. A single low hatch does not necessarily mean the incubator settings were wrong.

What's the difference between still-air and forced-air incubators for temperature?

A forced-air incubator's fan mixes the air so temperature is close to uniform throughout, which is why its target (99.5°F/37.5°C) is measured anywhere at egg height. A still-air incubator has a temperature gradient - warmer near the top of the incubator, cooler near the bottom - so its thermometer is placed at the top of the egg and the target is set a degree or two higher (about 101-102°F) to compensate. Never apply the forced-air target number to a still-air reading or the batch will run cool.

Can I open the incubator during lockdown to help a chick that's struggling to hatch?

Generally no - resist assisting for at least 12-24 hours after the first visible crack (external pip), since chicks can rest for many hours mid-hatch and that is normal, not a sign of trouble. Opening the incubator crashes humidity for every other egg in lockdown, and premature assistance (peeling shell before the chick has fully absorbed its yolk sac) risks fatal bleeding. Only intervene if a chick has clearly stalled well past a normal hatch window and you're prepared to accept the risk.

Why do Muscovy ducks take a full week longer to hatch than other ducks?

Muscovy ducks (Cairina moschata) are a separate genus from Mallard-derived domestic ducks (Anas platyrhynchos), not simply a slower-developing breed of the same species - the 35-day incubation period reflects that genetic distance. This is also why Muscovy and other domestic ducks can crossbreed but the offspring ("mulard" ducks) are typically sterile, a classic sign of a genus-level rather than breed-level difference.

What if the eggs haven't hatched by the expected hatch date?

Give it a few extra days before assuming the batch failed - a couple of days' variation from the calculated hatch date is common and not a sign of a problem, since incubation temperature swings of even a degree can shift hatch timing. If there is no pipping activity at all several days past the expected date, candle to check whether the eggs are still showing life (movement, an intact air cell) before discarding them.
