Why does dry matter content matter in animal feed?

Nutrients in feed are diluted by water. Comparing feeds on a dry matter (DM) basis removes the effect of moisture differences and gives an accurate comparison of nutrient density. Fresh grass at 80% moisture has far less energy per kg as-fed than hay at 12% moisture.

What is a typical dry matter percentage for hay vs silage?

Well-made hay is typically 85-92% dry matter (8-15% moisture). Corn silage is 30-40% DM (60-70% moisture). Haylage or baleage falls between them at 40-60% DM. Fresh pasture grass is roughly 15-25% DM.

How do I convert from as-fed to dry matter basis?

Divide the as-fed nutrient percentage by the DM percentage. For example, hay with 10% crude protein as-fed and 88% DM contains 10 / 0.88 = 11.4% crude protein on a DM basis. This allows fair comparison with silage or other high-moisture feeds.
