Why does dry matter content matter in animal feed?

Nutrients in feed are diluted by water. Comparing feeds on a dry matter (DM) basis removes the effect of moisture differences and gives an accurate comparison of nutrient density. Fresh grass at 80% moisture has far less energy per kg as-fed than hay at 12% moisture.

What is a typical dry matter percentage for hay vs silage?

Well-made hay is typically 85-92% dry matter (8-15% moisture). Corn silage is 30-40% DM (60-70% moisture). Haylage or baleage falls between them at 40-60% DM. Fresh pasture grass is roughly 15-25% DM.

How do I convert from as-fed to dry matter basis?

Divide the as-fed nutrient percentage by the DM percentage. For example, hay with 10% crude protein as-fed and 88% DM contains 10 / 0.88 = 11.4% crude protein on a DM basis. This allows fair comparison with silage or other high-moisture feeds.

How This Calculator Works

Feed and forage are analyzed and reported on two bases: as-fed and dry matter. The as-fed weight is the weight of the material as you would handle it - grass at 78% moisture, hay at 12% moisture, or grain at 14% moisture. The dry matter weight is what remains after all moisture has been removed. Because water content varies enormously across feed types, comparing nutrient concentrations or intake figures on an as-fed basis is misleading. Dry matter basis removes moisture from the equation and puts all feeds on the same footing.

This calculator converts between the two bases in both directions. Enter an as-fed weight and its moisture percentage to find the dry matter weight and water content. Or enter a known dry matter weight and the moisture percentage of the target material to find the as-fed equivalent, which is useful when formulating diets from feed analysis reports.

As-Fed vs Dry Matter Basis

Consider two hay samples: Sample A is baled hay at 12% moisture, Sample B is haylage at 45% moisture. Sample A has 880 g of dry matter per kilogram. Sample B has 550 g per kilogram. If both are reported as containing 160 g of crude protein per kilogram as-fed, the protein concentrations on a dry matter basis are 182 g/kg for Sample A and 291 g/kg for Sample B. The haylage is actually richer in protein - the high moisture diluted its apparent as-fed value. Comparing feeds on a dry matter basis corrects for this dilution effect and allows meaningful side-by-side comparisons.

Dry matter intake (DMI) is the measure used in livestock nutrition models. Cows are typically said to eat 2.5-3.5% of their body weight in dry matter per day. Applying that figure to as-fed weights would give very different answers for cows eating fresh grass versus dry hay, even if both diets are nutritionally equivalent on a dry matter basis.

Worked Example

A farmer weighs 100 kg of baled hay with a moisture content of 14%. Dry matter % = 100 - 14 = 86%. Dry matter weight = 100 x 0.86 = 86 kg. Water content = 100 - 86 = 14 kg. Now the farmer receives a feed analysis expressed on a dry matter basis and wants to know how much fresh hay to feed. If the diet calls for 9 kg of dry matter, the as-fed amount = 9 / 0.86 = 10.47 kg of hay to weigh out.

Tips and FAQ

Why does moisture matter for storage? Feed stored above safe moisture thresholds supports mold and bacterial growth. Hay above 20% moisture at baling heats and can spontaneously combust. Safe baling moisture is typically below 16-18% for large round bales.

How do I measure moisture? Commercial grain moisture meters give instant readings for grains and some forages. For hay and silage, the oven-dry method (105 degrees C to constant weight) is the reference standard. Near-infrared (NIR) analysis from a feed testing laboratory gives moisture alongside full nutrient profiles.

Can moisture exceed 100%? No. Moisture percent is always between 0 and 100. Values above 80% are common in aquatic plants and fresh silage but physically cannot exceed 100%.

Is the reverse calculator useful in practice? Yes, particularly when diet formulations from nutrition software are expressed in dry matter kilograms and you need to know how many as-fed kilograms of each ingredient to weigh out at feeding time.
